Why saving water matters
Water might seem unlimited when it comes out of the tap, but in truth, only 1% of the Earth’s water is suitable for drinking. As a student living in halls, your daily habits can make a real difference. Saving water means:
🌱 Helping the environment by conserving a limited resource
🧼 Avoiding issues like damp, mould and plumbing problems
📣 Creating a culture of sustainability among students

Report leaks immediately
Leaky taps and constantly running loos can waste tens of litres a day.
Top tip: See a leak? Report it.

Keep showers short
Aim for 5 minutes or less. Short showers use far less water than baths.
Top tip: Time your shower to a single song!

Turn off the tap when brushing
Leaving the water running while brushing can waste up to 6 litres per minute.
Top tip: Use a cup to rinse instead – simple and effective.

Wait for a full load of washing
Avoid running the washing machine half-empty. A full load uses water more efficiently.
Top tip: If your machine has an eco cycle, use it whenever possible.

Be smart when washing up
Don’t leave the tap running when doing the washing-up. Fill the sink or use a washing-up bowl to rinse.
Top tip: If there’s a dishwasher available, wait until it’s full before switching it on.
🗯️ Need to report a leak?
Contact your accommodation team or use the maintenance portal to flag any issues.
Let’s keep our halls dry, efficient, and eco-friendly – together.
💪 Saving water is a team effort
Living in shared accommodation means working together. Encourage your flatmates to:
- Report faults and leaks quickly
- Avoid waste in shared kitchens and bathrooms
- Post friendly reminders near sinks and showers
A collective effort leads to real change.
