Watergate launches free Water Impact Calculator
When the UK is considering shipping in water supplies from Norwegian fjords, you know water scarcity is a pressing issue – even in soggy Britain.
Many unsure how to start saving water
More and more people are waking up to the need to use less water.
And with household water and energy bills continuing to climb, using less of the blue stuff is also an important way to keep a lid on costs.
Yet, many don’t know how much water they use, or how to start saving.
Saving options in seconds
To help, we’ve teamed up with the UK’s leading independent voice on water efficiency, Waterwise, to launch a new, free Water Impact Calculator.
It’s the first tool to help you estimate your water use in just a few seconds, and then bring all the potential savings – water, carbon and money – all together in one place.
The calculator includes simple water saving tips that show how a typical household can make quick changes to make impactful savings.
For example, by following all the tips, a four-person, heavy water-use household using 814 litres per day could cut their water consumption by 575 litres/day, saving them up to £850 on water and energy bills per year and cutting their water carbon footprint by 2.2 tonnes annually.
Free code to add the calculator to your site
We’ve also made the code for the Water Impact Calculator available for free to anyone who wishes to feature the tool on their website and join us in raising awareness of the need to save water.
We’re proud to launch this free new calculator to help people save water and money. We also hope it will help more people understand the link between saving water and saving carbon. Very few of us understand how processing water – and the way we subsequently use it – generates substantial carbon emissions. We need to learn to value water and better understand how using less of it helps reduce the impact of climate change.

Saving water means saving carbon – it’s vital that as part of our climate actions we take steps to use less water and it’s important we start taking action now. There is also a clear monetary benefit to doing so – the price of water and energy is continuing to rise, so using less water means a little more money back in your pocket. We hope this new tool helps people better understand this and equips them with easy ways to take action.
