Is AI replacing plumbers? Or becoming their most useful tool?

When my local plumber came to install my Sonic, I’ll admit I had a slight moment of hesitation.

We build technology that helps detect leaks early and can shut off water automatically. On paper, that sounds like the kind of thing that might reduce the need for emergency call-outs.

So I found myself wondering: is he going to see this as competition?

After all, if you “stop leaks at source”, surely that means less work for plumbers.

Turns out, he saw it completely differently.

In fact, he welcomed it.

His view was simple. Anything that spots plumbing issues early is a good thing, especially the small, hidden ones that homeowners usually know nothing about until it’s too late.

If anything, he said, this kind of system would likely create more jobs, not fewer.

And the more I thought about it, the more that made sense.

The problem with how we deal with water today

Most plumbing issues don’t start as emergencies.

They start small. A slow leak. A stuck toilet. A slight pressure issue. Something that could be fixed quickly and cheaply if anyone knew it was there.

The problem is, most of the time, no one does.

Leaks often go unnoticed for weeks or months. By the time they’re discovered, you’re dealing with damage, disruption, and a much bigger job than it needed to be.

That’s not good for homeowners. And it’s not ideal for plumbers either.

It means more reactive, stressful call-outs instead of planned, controlled work.

Where AI actually fits in

There’s a lot of noise around AI at the moment. But in this context, it’s not abstract or complicated.

It’s doing something very practical.

It’s watching what’s happening in the pipework and flagging anything that doesn’t look right.

In our case, Sonic is sampling water flow multiple times per second and learning what “normal” looks like in a property. It can tell the difference between a shower, a tap, or a toilet just from the flow pattern.

More importantly, it can spot when something isn’t behaving as it should.

That might be a leak. It might be waste. It might be a system issue developing.

Either way, it turns something invisible into something visible.

Why plumbers actually benefit

This is the bit that often gets missed.

AI doesn’t fix plumbing.

It doesn’t replace diagnosis, experience, or skill.

What it does is surface problems earlier.

Instead of getting a call when a ceiling is already coming down, the issue is identified when it’s still small. That changes the nature of the work.

It becomes:

  • earlier intervention
  • clearer diagnosis
  • better conversations with customers

And importantly, it uncovers work that would otherwise never be seen.

Small leaks. Inefficient fixtures. Pressure imbalances. The kind of issues that sit quietly in the background until they become expensive.

From a plumber’s perspective, that’s not lost work. That’s new, visible work.

A shift from reactive to proactive

The industry has always been reactive by necessity.

You fix what’s broken.

But that’s starting to change.

With continuous monitoring and smarter systems, it becomes possible to move upstream. To deal with issues before they escalate.

That’s better for everyone:

  • homeowners avoid damage and disruption
  • insurers reduce claims
  • plumbers spend less time on emergencies and more time on planned work

It’s not about removing the need for plumbers. It’s about changing when and how they’re needed.

A new tool in the bag

AI may become a standard tool in the bag for plumbers alongside the pipe wrench, pliers and plunger. And in some cases, it already is.

It’s not replacing the tools. It’s adding to them.

Just like better diagnostics transformed other industries, from automotive to heating, we’re starting to see the same shift in plumbing.

More visibility. Better information. Earlier action.

This isn’t about technology versus the trade – it’s about giving skilled professionals better tools to do their job.

Because at the end of the day, someone still needs to fix the problem.

The difference is, now we can spot it before it turns into one.
